Mods are on by default in Claude Code 2.1.287 — nothing to turn on. A mod is a hook that ships inside a plugin; the official walkthrough's first one is ~80 lines. Written by its publisher, running with the same access Claude Code has: read the repo before you install.

I have been building some mods just to test them and they are really useful. I really like them. You can build some mods to stop asking Claude for some information and you can save some tokens, for now this is the best use I found for them.

@lydiahallie A mod that links the final summary back to the actual tool output would be useful. I've had Claude change its conclusion after I asked it to reread the logs.

@trq212 The interesting part isn’t customizing Claude Code. It’s that software is slowly becoming something you modify while using it, instead of waiting for the developer to ship the feature. That’s a much bigger shift than “mods” 😉

Mods make the execution layer programmable. The interesting next step is what happens to the history: context → permission → tool call → action → outcome → evidence. If that chain persists across runs, it becomes more than audit data — it becomes reusable execution knowledge. Do you agree?

Veeeery excited about mods, it’s basically middleware for Claude Code! You can create a TypeScript function that intercepts CC's internal events (tool calls, prompts, model requests and renders) and change what actually happens. You can also add your own UI and commands!

@trq212 the token weather band is a great example. curious if mods end up shared like vscode extensions or stay mostly personal, since claude can just write you your own in a minute

Claude Code now has mods. You can change how it behaves, customize the UI or swap in your own features with a few lines of TypeScript. They ship inside plugins and install with /plugin. A coding tool you can reshape from the inside is a different kind of product.

@trq212 Could mods lead to an instance becoming incompatible with future releases or are they treated more as extensions? Will CC automatically maintain/merge with core functionality if it becomes available in the core app?

A rule in CLAUDE.md asks Claude to behave. A mod can enforce it: it runs inside Claude Code and can hold a tool call, rewrite a prompt or answer the call itself. The same power cuts both ways. Mods aren't sandboxed and can approve a tool call before you're asked, so run claude plugin validate before installing one.
