Anthropic Claude Code Mods (Oct 1): customize Claude Code with small TypeScript/JavaScript functions that ship inside plugins. A mod hooks session events (tool calls, prompts, permissions, UI draws) and can observe, rewrite, or answer them — rewrite a prompt, block/retry a tool call, approve or deny permissions, redact secrets from tool output, or draw custom UI (panes, bands above the prompt, buttons). Requires Claude Code 2.1.287+ (npm `@anthropic-ai/claude-code`); mods on by default in the CLI and desktop app. Some built-ins now ship as mods (e.g. `/diff`); Team/Enterprise load `sec-default` first. Install via `/plugin` or the Claude directory. Claude Code is becoming a platform, not just a coding agent. Anthropic just added Mods, letting developers change how Claude Code behaves, customize its UI, or add entirely new features with TypeScript. You can even ask Claude to build the mod for you. Some examples already exist: Token Weather visualizes your remaining context window. Blast Radius previews the impact of risky shell commands before they run. Replay Theater lets you replay file edits from a turn one change at a time. Even some built-in features can now be replaced or disabled as mods. The interesting part isn't just customization. It means developers can start building the tools they wish their AI coding agent had. @bcherny This is so cool. I built a mod to send encrypted passwords into the chat. Claude can work with them but won't read them. So no secret in the chat history.

Most mods will add chrome, but the behaviour change worth shipping is the opposite. Put the suggestion next to the caret, not in a panel. Tab accepts it, and keep typing and it goes. If the line isn't clearly better than what you already wrote, show nothing. Eight seconds of that, one keystroke and no extra UI, proves the mod. A settings screen doesn't.

You can now mod Claude Code. Change how it looks. Change how it acts. A few lines of TypeScript, or just tell Claude to build the mod.

Claude Code is a mess. Until you install this. There's an official Anthropic plugin called claude-code-setup. It tells you what automations you can set up (hooks, skills, MCP servers, subagents…) and how to configure them step by step. Basically, it analyzes your project and recommends what to activate.
